Overview

This is the second volume of essays from the Centre for Culture, Technology and Values, and it carries on the standard set by its predecessor in providing accessible and useful essays on critical contemporary issues. This unique collection, deriving from the Sophia Europa project, at once creative and provocative, delivers an engaging commentary on the interface between culture and values from a variety of perspectives. The contributors include Benedictine monks, university academics, economists, philosophers and ethicists. In keeping with the mission of the Centre for Culture, Technology and Values, these chapters collectively engage in critical reflection regarding the impact of technology on culture and values in light of the Christian understanding of human dignity and social responsibility with the goal of stimulating, facilitating, and enhancing a dialogue with those concerned with the role of technology in contemporary society, with a special emphasis on culture and values. This work addresses a significant gap in the contemporary literature: while many are focused on the issue of technology per se, this volume considers technology from a much wider social, historical and holistic perspective, and assists in fostering a debate about technology that considers wider implications of application, values and identity.
