Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Cross-Border Movement of People from Hong Kong to Guangdong Province, China, 1996-2001 Submitted by Tse Hau Ming, Pauline for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in August 2003 In the era of globalization, the shrinking of geographical distance and improvement of transport networks have greatly facilitated the cross-border movement of people. People travel from place to place in search of employment opportunities and a better living environment. This study examines the patterns of the cross-border movement of people between Hong Kong and its neighbouring Guangdong Province. The relationship between Hong Kong and China has developed rapidly since the late 1970s. After China abandoned the approach of self-reliance and introduced the Open Door Policy in 1979, cooperation between the two economies under different political systems has developed quickly through trade and investment initiatives. Economic and social linkages have been further intensified since Hong Kong's return to China in 1997. Among the different forms of trans-border economic interactions, the cross-border flow of people has increased dramatically in recent years. This study investigates the distinct patterns and processes of the cross-border movement of people in the Hong Kong-Guangdong region. Due to Hong Kong's unique geographical and political settings, the cross-border flow of people in the Hong Kong-Guangdong region has been distinct from what is observed in other border regions in the world. Four main types of frequent cross-border travelers are identified, namely, shoppers, workers, home purchasers and the elderly retired in Guangdong. This study reveals the distinct travel patterns of these four types of travelers and analyzes their economic and social motivations. My analysis suggests that economic complementarity cannot fully explain the special characteristics of the cross-border flows of people between Hong Kong and Guangdong, and that political, social and cultural factors must also be taken into account. Cross-border population mobility should best be seen as a process contingent upon varying political, geographical and social conditions. This study contributes new insights into the distinct patterns and processes of cross-border population movement in the Hong Kong-Guangdong region. The role played by the HKSAR government in promoting population mobility across the border has also been critically evaluated. The findings of this research can be used not only as a reference for policy making but also for comparison with cases in other globalizing world regions.
