Overview

"This volume reports the findings of a study of the productivity impacts of varietal improvements research conducted at a number of international centres affiliated with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. Such centres have been at the forefront of the ""Green Revolution"" which resulted in the breeding of new crop varieties of the world's staple food crops. The study was initiated and supported by the Impact Assessment and Evaluation Group of the CGIAR. Econometric models are used to evaluate investment in these cases of agricultural research, and to analyze impact in selected countries (Brazil, China and India)."

Reviews

An important reference work for plant breeders throughout the world. This volume, the result of a symposium held in 1996, attempts to address the economic importance of plant genetic resources (PGRs) to improved crop productivity, an historically difficult task. . . .The book makes a sound attempt to unravel the economic contribution of PGRs to crop improvement and finds that its contribution is large. . . .Anyone concerned with PGRs and the economic impact they have on agriculture will find useful information in this book. -- The Quarterly Review of Biology This volume, the result of a symposium held in 1996, attempts to address the economic importance of plant genetic resources (PGRs) to improved crop productivity, an historically difficult task. . . .The book makes a sound attempt to unravel the economic contribution of PGRs to crop improvement and finds that its contribution is large. . . .Anyone concerned with PGRs and the economic impact they have on agriculture will find useful information in this book. -- The Quarterly Review of Biology This volume, the result of a symposium held in 1996, attempts to address the economic importance of plant genetic resources (PGRs) to improved crop productivity, an historically difficult task. . . .The book makes a sound attempt to unravel the economic contribution of PGRs to crop improvement and finds that its contribution is large. . . .Anyone concerned with PGRs and the economic impact they have on agriculture will find useful information in this book. -- The Quarterly Review of Biology This volume, the result of a symposium held in 1996, attempts to address the economic importance of plant genetic resources (PGRs) to improved crop productivity, an historically difficult task. . . .The book makes a sound attempt to unravel the economic contribution of PGRs to crop improvement andfinds that its contribution is large. . . .Anyone concerned with PGRs and the economic impact they have on agriculture will find useful information in this book. -- The Quarterly Review of Biology
