Excerpt: CHAPTER II CICERONIAN CONTROVERSIES IN ITALY: POGGIO AND VALLA; POLITIAN AND CORTESI; PICO AND BEMBO Poggio And Valla The first of the Ciceronian controversies originated in the criticism of Poggio's diction by one of Valla's pupils. Lorenzo Valla (1406-1457) had been educated by Vittorino da Fdtre and had thoroughly imbibed the doctrine of the school of Barzizza. He had won distinction in the field of grammar and rhetoric by the publication of his De elegantia Latinae linguae, a critical study of anc1ent and contemporary writers. He had dared to advance somewhat beyond the position of the rational Ciceronians and to declare that one could imitate Cicero very effectively by following Quintilian. He had established a school in Rome with the avowed purpose of exalting Quintilian over Cicero. Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459), on the other hand, was the advocate of the growing tendency toward servilitas in imitation. Though he was but an indifferent imitator he considered himself a perfect stylist and attributed his success to the adoption of Cicero as an exclusive model.1 The defence of this position, as incidentally embodied in five invectives against Valla, will outline his argument in the controversy; while Valla's answers in the form of four Antidoti and two Dialogues will present the other side.
