Continuing Professional Development for Clinical Psychologists: A Practical Handbook

Overview

Continuing Professional Development is a hot issue in clinical psychology, and one which has not, up to now, been clearly delineated. Over the next few years, Clinical Psychologists will be obliged to be chartered under the NHS's Health Professions Council (""statutory regulation""), and CPD will become compulsory - up until now it has been encouraged, but not necessary. The book will provide an accessible, practical self-help guide to all that clinical psychologists need to know about their own continuing professional development. It will have a clear practical focus throughout, including a chapter which will specifically explore the many practical issues involved in meeting CPD needs. This will include everything they need to know about undertaking CPD activities in local services from funding sources for CPD activity to, how to find out what CPD activities or materials are available through to checklists for booking conference venues. The book will begin with an overview of the historical context to the need for CPD in the NHS and for the profession. This will include the implications of statutory regulation and the associated mandatory CPD requirement. Later chapters will explore the CPD needs of members of the profession at different stages of their careers and describe examples of good practice within the UK where CPD initiatives are in place to meet identified needs. The book will also describe some of the CPD structures required in services, the outcomes of CPD activity in practice, and the work of the British Psychological Society (BPS), the Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP) and the Special Interest Groups and Faculties in this field. It is aimed, primarily, at clinical psychologists working in the UK but will be relevant reading for other health professionals, especially those who work in mental health. It will also be essential reading for trainee clinical psychologists by providing a clear overview of some important professional issues. It will be purchased by clinical psychology services and training programmes. There are no competing titles on the market. This won't be a huge seller but it is an authoritative, prestigious book which will help us to establish a footing in clinical psychology.
