Overview

Cofounder of the pioneering AI company DeepMind sounds the alarm on the unprecedented risks to global order posed by a wave of fast-developing technologies like artificial intelligence and genetic engineering We are approaching a critical threshold in the history of our species. Everything is about to change. Soon we will live surrounded by AIs. They will carry out complex tasks - operating businesses, producing unlimited digital content, running core government services, and maintaining infrastructure. This will be a world of DNA printers and quantum computers, engineered pathogens and autonomous weapons, robot assistants and abundant energy. It represents nothing less than a step change in human capability. We are not prepared. As co-founder of the pioneering AI company DeepMind, Mustafa Suleyman has been at the centre of this revolution, one poised to become the single greatest accelerant of progress in history. The coming decade, he argues, will be defined by this wave of powerful, fast-proliferating new technologies. Driven by overwhelming political and commercial incentives, these tools will help address our global challenges and create vast wealth - but also upheaval on a once unimaginable scale. In The Coming Wave, Suleyman shows how these forces threaten the grand bargain of the nation-state, the foundation of global order. As our fragile governments sleepwalk into disaster, we face an existential dilemma- unprecedented harms arising from unchecked openness on one side, the threat of overbearing surveillance on the other. Can we forge a narrow path between catastrophe and dystopia? This groundbreaking book from the ultimate AI insider establishes 'the containment problem' - the task of maintaining control over powerful technologies - as the essential challenge of our age.

Nobody has been closer to the unfolding AI revolution than Mustafa Suleyman, and nobody is better placed to outline the risks and rewards of the huge technological changes happening right now. This is an extraordinary and utterly essential guide to this unique moment in human history * Eric Schmidt, former CEO, Google; author of The Age of AI * In The Coming Wave, Mustafa Suleyman offers a powerful argument that today's explosive technological revolution both fits the pattern of history but also why AI and synthetic biology are poised to be uniquely disruptive. Read this essential book to understand the pace and scale of these technologies - how they will proliferate across our society and their potential to challenge the fabric of the institutions that organize our world * Ian Bremmer, founder, Eurasia Group; author of The Power of Crisis * When The Coming Wave landed in my inbox, I cleared the diary and got reading. This is an extraordinary and necessary book; the awe-inspiring thought is that - in twenty years - it will seem almost like a conservative vision of the future, whereas right now, reading it is impossible without pausing every few pages to wonder: Can this be true? It's the book's genius to explain, soberly and gently, why yes, this will all be true - why and how. The tone is gentle and kind and sympathetic to the reader's sense of shock. There are terrifying moments, as there should be when one realizes that most of what is familiar is about to be transformed. But ultimately, one leaves energized and thrilled to be alive right now. The wave is about to hit and this is the forecast * Alain de Botton *

Deeply rewarding and consistently astonishing * Stephen Fry * A fascinating, well-written and important book * Yuval Noah Harari, author of Sapiens * Rich with interesting facts, arresting arguments, and compelling observations, it is essential reading * Daniel Kahneman, author of Thinking Fast and Slow * An extraordinary and necessary book ... one leaves energised and thrilled to be alive right now * Alain de Botton, author and philosopher * An excellent guide for navigating unprecedented times * Bill Gates *
