Overview

"Is there magic in your junk drawer or in the pieces of a broken china plate? In Conjuring the Commonplace, Laine Fuller and Cory Thomas Hutcheson answer with a resounding, ""Yes!"" and deftly show you how to incorporate that magic into your everyday, pointing to other hidden treasures in your home along the way. As the hosts of the New World Witchery podcast, Cory and Laine have shared the folklore and magic of North America and their own magical journeys with listeners for over a decade. Conjuring the Commonplace continues that conversation, highlighting the folklore associated common objects and the practical ways they have each incorporated these small magics into their lives and how you might too. If you've ever questioned whether to toss out that bit of string from a sewing project or wondered what you should know before picking up that shiny penny on the sidewalk, this is the book for you."

"""Conjuring the Commonplace is a cozy and comprehensive guide to magical tools that are already nestled in your home. Cory and Laine guide you on a delightful journey through the surprising terra incognita of junk drawers and hall closets, pointing out magical uses for everything from humble pennies and old rags to your favorite teacup or coffee mug. As relaxed and welcoming as a chat with an old friend around a kitchen table, this book is brimming with advice about how to turn every moment magical."" Dee Norman, author Burn a Black Candle: A Grimoire of Italian-American Magic ""A must have for anyone who fancies themselves a folk magic practitioner! This grounded, well researched book manages to root its information in historical practice while allowing the magic to evolve to fit the modern practitioner. A true testament to the fact that folk magic isn't dead and gone, but all around us, growing and adapting. All you have to do to find it is open a junk drawer."" J. Allen Cross, author of American Brujeria: Modern Mexican American Folk Magic ""Grab your dish towel, covet your spice rack, be mindful of where you sweep, and don't let things fall to the floor because Conjuring the Commonplace is afoot! We often hear how magic and divination are all around us, but it's the where and how that is rarely explained, until now. Dwell in your dwelling -like never before- with this distinctly damn near definitive book on household magic!"" Christopher Orapello - Artist, witch, coauthor of Besom, Stang & Sword, and cohost of Down at the Crossroads podcast ""This book is such a treasure and is a compendium of how I do my own work. A need arises, the tools to solve the issue are always at hand and the witch gets to work. What's in my pocket? What's in my quilting bag? Then a ramble through the garden. Done and dusted! What's in your Drawer of Miscellany? Everything you need for magic. Read this book--it will inspire your practice and unleash your creativity."" H. Byron Ballard, witch, author of Small Magics: Practical Secrets from an Appalachian Village Witch, and forensic folklorist ""Laine and Cory weave folk charms and rituals together into a seamless tapestry of magical traditions. Their work takes us back into our own home as a source of power--a place that many of us have forgotten in our practice. Repurposing household items for magic and healing is at the heart of so many folk cultures and it's refreshing to see these traditions treated with such kindness and excitement. It's clear to tell that this is a passion project for both of these fantastic storytellers. This practical and comprehensive guide will no doubt find its way onto the shelves of beginners and seasoned practitioners alike."" Brandon Weston, author of Ozark Folk Magic: Plants, Prayers & Healing and the Ozark Mountain Spell Book ""A cozy and bewitching read, Conjuring the Commonplace shines a light upon the magic residing in all the nooks and crannies of our everyday lives.
