Overview

Twenty-year-old Gillian boarded a ship for London with her school friend Mary without a moment's hesitation, because that's what young Australians did in the 1950s. Fortuitously they arrived just in time for the Queen's coronation, and spent two days queuing in the Mall to catch a glimpse. So began a long career of travel adventure. Hitchhiking alone through the southern states of the US, when hitchhiking was illegal, she encountered the kindness of strangers, spent a few miserable hours in a Virginia jail in an attempt to save money on accommodation, and stayed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, just weeks after Autherine Lucy was accepted as a student at the University of Alabama, the first African-American woman to be so, a decision that would ignite riots and help change the world. For over sixty years, on her many trips through Europe and North America, Gillian pursued music and sport, met famous folk, and made life-long friends, a joy that would continue throughout her life. But it was her love of opera that shone the brightest.

Author Information

Gillian Thomas has travelled for most of her life, often alone in the early years, and frequently to Italy in pursuit of opera and a chance to speak the language. Also a fan of Test cricket, she attends every day of every Test match at Adelaide Oval. She gets her love of sport from her father, Gordon Harris, who played 37 first class matches for South Australia between 1920 and 1931. Her love of music comes from her grandparents, who met at the Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide.
