OverviewThe aim of this book is to contribute to an understanding of the social construction of Brazilian childhood. In this case, it presents the treatment given to the subject of day care in Brazilian paediatric journals. The author invites the reader to integrate three fields of knowledge: ideology theory, gender theory and social studies on childhood. In our interpretation, although all the articles at least mention the term crèche, not all of them deal with early childhood education. Crèche is often only used as a research locus. The crèche is treated, explicitly and implicitly, as a place of risk used to make up for the absence of the mother, especially for low-income families. This interpretation is usually associated with the perception of the risk of illness, mobilising meanings of seriousness and negativity in relation to the crèche. In the study presented in this book, there was a lack of information about children's reactions when invasive procedures were used. We conclude that the discourses produced and disseminated by contemporary paediatrics can be interpreted as supporting relations of gender and age domination, i.e. they are ideological.
