"Ethical philosopher Sheldon Ackley (1919-2008) challenges the common view that ethics is a struggle between what is satisfying and what is worthwhile, arguing this inherited perspective limits and distorts our views of what we can make of ourselves. Sheldon Ackley was born in the Methodist parsonage in Beltrami, Minnesota, in 1919, and received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Boston University in 1948. He was the first Leader of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, and later served as a Senior Leader at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. Dr. Ackley died in 2008.
