Reviews

The final essay is a measured and thought-provoking examination of the placement and understanding of the Yuanmingyuan objects in the Fontainebleau displays, highlighting the focus on `ornamentation' as a principle of choice, and the readiness of the Empress and her architect to adapt and install objects in surprising ways, interpreted by Thomas as `a sincere attempt by Eugenie and her craftsmen to generate aesthetic deialogue with imperial Chinese culture. - Beth McKillop, Newsletter Number 26, May 2018
