Overview

The aim of this collection of papers is to help relieve coherence of its mystifying aura. Coherence has been dismissed as a vague, fuzzy and mystical notion with little practical value for the analyst. However, since the 1980s coherence has found its place as a key concept in discourse and text analysis. In this text, coherence is used in accordance with the European tradition where coherence is a context-dependent, hearer- (or reader-) orientated and comprehension-based interpretive notion. The text consists of 13 of the 18 papers given at the International Workshop on Coherence 1997. The papers are organized into sections which cover how to create or recreate coherence, how to negotiate coherence and degrees of coherence and thirdly how to describe coherence and views of coherence.
