Courtney, in Child Neuropsychol, 2005)""""Therapeutic Area: Psychotropic drug use in children and adolescents.Format: This is a soft-cover, spiral-bound book.Audience: Clinicians who are either experienced or in training are theintended audience.Purpose: This handbook's purpose is to serve as a user-friendly andpractical resource.Content: This book follows the format of its parent publication, ClinicalHandbook of Psychotropic Drugs. The editors have packaged outlinesand tables of the important classes of psychotropic medications inuse today in children and adolescents, including medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytic agents, hypnotics/sedatives, and mood stabilizers. The editors thoughtfully provided a 16 page introduction to psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents, and the handbook is strengthened considerably by the inclusion of many references and selected readings. Separate chapters discuss drugs of abuse and treatment of substance use disorders; adrenergic, cholinergic, and dopaminergic agents; herbal and natural products; and agents used to treat extrapyramidal side effects. There is also a 6 page summary of electroconvulsive therapy. Of unique value are 25 patient and caregiver information sheets that appear to be designedfor duplication as needed. These sheets cover issues such as A""Howquickly will the drug start working?A"", A""How long should you take thismedication?A"", A""What should you do if you forget to take a dose of yourmedication?A"", and A""Is this drug safe to take with other medication?A""Written by staff at universities located in Canada, the drugs described are not all available in the US. In addition, regulatory approval for use of agents in children and adolescents differ between Canada and the US. NEW PUBLICATIONSUsability: The book is well organized into 13 principal chapters thatcan be read out of sequence. A useful glossary is appended. Excellentpatient and caregiver information sheets are provided.Highlights: Factual information is concisely displayed in tables thateducators will want to share.Limitations: The authors should have summarized the differences inprescribing for children and adolescents compared with adults in a separate chapter. For example, an area of current attention is weight gain associated with antipsychotic use; this appears to be an even more substantial issue for children and adolescents than for adults. Another limitation is that the index is limited to drug names. It would have been ideal to include a CD -ROM of the book in PDF format so that searches could be done more efficiently, and clean (and also authorized) copies of the patient and caregiver information sheets could be easily reproduced. Webrelated resources would also have been usefulA--perhaps in the next edition. Comparison with Previous Edition: The prior edition of this book appeared in 2004 and contained 40 fewer pages. Comparison with Other Related Books: Missing from this text arethe narratives on the art of psychopharmacology and how to appraise the scientific literature supporting the use of psychotropic drugs in the treatment of children and adolescents. However, this volume provides the outlines and tables often missing in textbooks. This book is intended for use as a regular reference to be kept close at hand on the clinician's office bookshelf. Reviewer's Summary: The book's overall presentation is clear and well organized. It is moderately priced and reasonably up to date. Although those purchasing the book with the expectation that it will serve as a guide to the art of pharmacotherapy will be disappointed, others purchasingthe book for concise tables that can be used for review, reference, and teaching will be satisfied. Those seeking patient informationsheets to give to their clients will be ecstatic.""Reviewer: Leslie L Citrome MD MPH, Nathan S Kline Institute forPsychiatric Research, Orangeburg, NY, and the Department of Psychiatry,New York University School of Medicine, New York, NYPublished Online, 19 Dec 2007, www.theannals.comDOI 10.1345/aph.1K485DOI 10.1345/aph.1BR08A148 n The Annals of Pharmacotherapy n 2008 January, Volume 42 www.theannals.com"
