Overview

In this series, acclaimed comics scholar Dr. Julian Darius argues that the DC Universe is old enough to have produced a canon of classic stories. Here, he analyzes this canon as it pertains to the Justice League and DC's universe-wide crossovers. Since 1940, DC Comics has been bringing its heroes together, first as the Justice Society, then (beginning in 1960) as the Justice League, and finally (beginning in 1985) in universe-wide crossovers. Shared super-hero universes achieved widespread attention in the wake of Marvel's movies, but DC's been paving the way since 1940. A decade in the making, CLASSICS ON INFINITE EARTHS takes readers on a tour of this history, using discussion of classic stories as a unique way of illuminating the history and evolution of the DC Universe. In the process, Dr. Julian Darius offers what may be the very first long-term study of how to manage such a shared universe. From Sequart Organization. More info at http: //sequart.org

Author Information

In 1996, while still an undergraduate, Dr. Julian Darius founded what would become Sequart Organization, which promotes comics and popular culture as legitimate forms of art. After graduating magna cum laude from Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisconsin), Darius obtained his M.A. in English, authoring a thesis on John Milton and utopianism. In 2002, he moved to Waikiki, teaching college while obtaining an M.A. in French (high honors) and a Ph.D. in English. In 2005, Darius published the first scholarly book on Christopher Nolan's Batman films. He has since published books on (among other subjects) Batman: The Killing Joke, which elaborated a theory on the book's plot that was praised by Kevin Smith; Jack Kirby's comic-book continuation of 2001: A Space Odyssey; and Mai, the Psychic Girl. He also co-authored, with Kevin Thurman, a book on Warren Ellis. In 2011, Darius founded Martian Lit, which publishes creative work, including his comic Martian Comics. He currently lives in Illinois.
