Overview

The second edition of this well-received classic textbook in organic chemistry has been completely revised and restructured to reflect the developments in stereoselective synthesis over the past decade. The prominent author team with long-standing experience in teaching and industry has removed obsolete topics, while expanding existing chapters and adding such new topics as stereoselective cross-couplings and C-C activations reactions. New features include a brief section on reaction mechanism and key principles, as well as selected exercises with answers to help students in their understanding of the topic. Retaining its proven concept, this clearly is a must-have for students and lecturers in organic chemistry while equally serving as an excellent reference for every synthetic organic chemist in academia or industry.

Author Information

Erick M. Carreira is Professor at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. He obtained a B.S. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, USA, in 1984, under the supervision of Prof. S. E. Denmark, and his Ph.D. in 1990 from Harvard University, USA, under the supervision of Prof. D. A. Evans. After carrying out postdoctoral work with Prof. P. Dervan at the California Institute of Technology, USA, he joined the faculty at the same institution as an assistant professor of chemistry and was promoted to full professor in 1997. In 1998 he moved to the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry at the ETH Zurich. He is the recipient of, among others, the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry amd Nobel Laureate Signature Award. His research program focuses on the asymmetric synthesis of biologically active, stereochemically complex, natural products. Lisbet Kvaerno is a development chemist specialist in process research at H. Lundbeck A/S in Valby, Denmark. She received her M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, working with Prof. J. Wengel. In 2004 she obtained her Ph.D. at the Technical University of Denmark (Prof. D. Tanner) and ETH Zurich in Switzerland (Prof. E. M. Carreira). She did postdoctoral work at Harvard University, USA, in the research group of Prof. D. A. Evans. She was an independent junior group leader at the Max-Planck-Institute of Coal Research in Mulheim, Germany, before she joined Lundbeck in 2008.
