Overview

Featuring original research findings from a key Chinese national research centre, this book provides researchers with cutting-edge, reliable and comprehensive information about children and youth in modern China. The book employs a unique methodology to analyze China's youth in terms of human capital development in a transitional economy. Coverage spans a wide range of critical issues, including: children's physical and mental development, leisure and consumption choices, youth employment, pop culture, one-child families, internet use, and juvenile delinquency. Written specifically for undergraduate and graduate courses in Economics, China studies, and Development, the book will also be of interest to those wishing to understand Chinese consumer behaviour in this diverse and dynamic region.

'...the most comprehensive, thorough, and authoritative source of information about Chinese children and adolescents I have found in the English language...a fascinating and well-documented story of how the changing Chinese culture is reflected in the changing lives of Chinese youth.' Professor Jane Ogden, East Texas Baptist University, USA 'This books is one of the most interesting I have read all year...For English-speaking scholars, there are few accessible books on Chinese children and youth available...This is an important book. Given the likely dominance of the People's Republic of China in the economic world, it is important to understand each other better. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to all academics and their students...' Ann Buchanan, University of Oxford, UK 'Such a brief synopsis of the various papers cannot do justice to the richness of the contributions on a wide variety of subjects to do with youth and children...the research findings summarized so well in this book make a valuable contribution in adding to and updating our knowledge...' The China Journal
