Overview

The first comprehensive survey of the influential Belgian filmmaker's film installations One of the foremost avant-garde filmmakers of the 1970s, Chantal Akerman (1950-2015) moved toward the visual arts as a secondary career with the 1995 screening of her film D'est. Originally a documentary shot on 16mm film, D'est was transformed by Akerman into a large spatial installation played across 24 monitors. From that point on, Akerman continued to experiment with the possibilities of exhibition spaces, persisting in her lifelong project to document the political dimensions of daily life. This publication highlights the French filmmaker's installations, with full-color photographs and several essays exploring the central themes of Akerman's oeuvre such as gender roles, migration and the passage of time.
