Overview

'Changing Sides' is a personal narrative by the author covering the years of World War II in Berlin where he was born and grew up and ending at his home seventy years later in the Carolinas as an immigrant who became an American 'by choice' and a content 'Southerner' at that. His story splits into two parts. The early years of his life and his family's survival and reunion and the second part telling of the time as an immigrant to America with its challenges, failures and ultimate success. It tells of the Soviets victorious advances into Berlin and their mother's escape to the West and freedom with him and his brother. It tells of his father's role in the attempted assassination of Adolf Hitler and of the five years in a Soviet POW camp after the war. It takes you through the years of reconstruction, the Berlin blockade and his efforts of creating the basis for his professional career. He then turns his back on the Old World as an immigrant to the New World, America, under the time honored quota rules of the 60's. Part two tells the story of success from janitor to millionaire and the American dream and what it used to mean. He lived in Germany, Switzerland, California, Mexico, New England and the South. He has travelled extensively in South America, Europe, South Africa and throughout the U.S. for over thirty years. In retirement he now has the chance to offer advice to his children and ten grand children in the hope that they would gain some insight and perspective or at least get to know their father and grandfather through his story in his own words.
