Overview

This book is primarily for pediatric and adult emergency room physicians, primary care providers, hospitalists, and nurses. It will also be useful for critical care specialists, cardiologists and trainees at all levels. Cardiac Emergencies in Children describes the pathophysiology of a diverse group of congenital and acquired heart conditions and presents a therapeutic rationale for treating children presenting with these  conditions under life-threatening conditions. The book discusses the effects of surgery on hemodynamics and how to manage these effects. Also described are the daily challenges faced by physicians, including identifying a child with heart disease, interpreting chest radiographs, ECGs, and laboratory findings, and beginning appropriate therapies.

“The book, Cardiac Emergencies in Children, is edited by Drs Sarnaik, Ross, Lipshultz, and Walters, all of whom are respected authorities in pediatric critical care. The background of the authors includes cardiology, intensive care, and cardiac surgery. … Cardiac Emergencies in Children, is better suited for the general pediatrician, family physician, or emergency doctor, and its format is not practical for the practicing anesthesiologist.” (Antonio Perez-Ferrer and Pablo Motta, Anesthesia & Analgesia , Vol. 128 (3), March, 2019) “The book contains well-placed and helpful full-color illustrations, EKGs, ultrasound images, algorithms, and tables. Chapters contain illustrative case presentations and practice questions. … This is a useful reference for those looking for in-depth information about caring for childrenwith cardiac emergencies, especially pediatric emergency physicians and others who work directly with these patients. It is also helpful for learners to build knowledge.” (Michael DeBoer, Doody's Book Reviews, August, 2018)
