L'identificazione molecolare e il sequenziamento del gene 18S rRNA sono stati effettuati sulle spugne raccolte. I risultati BLAST hanno mostrato la sequenza attuale del 18S rRNA di Clathria reinwardti con un punteggio di 1770 e una identità del 92% con la famiglia Microcionidae; identico al 90% con il Mycale fibrexilis. Pertanto, le spugne marine di Rameshwaram (costa sud-orientale dell'India) hanno mostrato una divergenza del 4% (campione 1) e del 3% (campione 2) rispetto alla Clathria reinwardti (Vosmaer, 1880).
