Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Cantonese Dichotic Digit Test: a comparison between normative and cleft palate groups Submitted by Louisa Yeung Yuet Ying for the degree of Master of Science in Audiology at the University of Hong Kong in May 2006 Central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) is commonly known as a functional disorder in the central auditory system. It has been frequently associated with language disorders and learning disability in pediatric patients. Some studies suggested that CAPD is one of the underlying causes for these deficits, most probably resulting from inefficient use of auditory information. Consistent findings from previous literature showed that children with cleft lip and/or palate are at high risk for language and learning deficits and the ultimate cause is, however, still unknown. Recent research revealed a high percentage of brain abnormalities and a reduction in amplitude in mismatch negativity (MMN) measurements amongst the cleft palate population, suggesting that language and learning deficits may originate from central processing dysfunction. The present study examined the functioning of the central auditory processing system in children and adolescents with cleft palate. A newly-developed Cantonese version of double dichotic digit test (DDT) was used as the assessment tool for CAPD, which includes both a free recall and a directed recall listening task. viii Normative values obtained from 70 children and adolescents aged from 11 to 17 were presented. The distribution of test scores indicated a strong ceiling effect. No significant ear advantage was observed. A sample of 22 children with cleft lip only (CPO), cleft lip and palate (CLP) or cleft palate only (CPO) was studied. Results indicated that the DDT fail rate for cleft children is more than twice that of normal non-cleft children. This finding suggested that cleft children are at a high risk for CAPD. However, due to the small sample size of the cleft group, comparison among different cleft type was inconclusive. ix DOI: 10.5353/th_b3799046 Subjects: Auditory pathwaysDichotic listening testsCleft palate - Patients - China - Hong Kong
