The U.S. Air Force brought him south of the Mason-Dixon Line to Middle Georgia in the late 1970s. After returning to civilian life he earned both BA and MA degrees from Mercer University. Currently he enjoys researching and writing about a variety of subjects. An avid historian and Army veteran, William (Bill) Smith was raised in Macon, Georgia. He worked as an interpreter for the Ocmulgee National Monument where his interest in the history of Macon increased while studying the Monument’s archives.
