OverviewThe Speelman Fellowship in Netherlandish Art at Wolfson College, Cambridge, celebrated its fortieth anniversary in 2011. Holders of the Fellowship have included such world-renowned scholars as Dr Lorne Campbell of the National Gallery, London, Professor Joanna Woodall of the Courtauld Institute of Art, and Professor Ivan Gaskell of the Bard Institute in New York. They have all contributed to the present volume, which presents new research by no fewer than seven Speelman Fellows and is edited by the post's present incumbent. Edward Speelman's endowment of the Fellowship in 1971 has crucially supplemented Cambridge's tradition of distinguished scholarship in the field. It also complements the important holdings of Dutch and Flemish works in the Fitzwilliam Museum and in Cambridge Colleges, a range of which are discussed in this volume. The eminent historian of Early Modern Art, Professor Jean Michel Massing of King's College, who has advised on the selection of Speelman Fellows for nearly forty years, also contributes an essay here.
