Overview

I had no thoughts it would ever become a book. My Calmes Neck Journal was simply a daily reflection of what I did and how I felt as I built my log cabin on the shores of the Shenandoah River. However, as I recorded the weather, noted the changing natural world around me, and detailed the work I had done that day, the writing itself took on a significance of its own. As the weeks and months of the project were documented, the act of writing afforded time for contemplation as to why the construction of my cabin provided fulfillment to my life and then pause, as I realized it could become an obsession. It was a good time in my life that provided a sense of accomplishment, and thirty years later it is a joy to relate the story.
