Roger Sparhawk, M.D. is a psychiatrist who has been treating patients with mood disorders for over 30 years, and specializing in bipolar disorder for the past 14 years. Dr. Sparhawk studied two years in Germany before completing his undergraduate degree in Psychology, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, at Case Western Reserve University. he then completed his medical studies at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and his psychiatric training in the Department of Psychiatry of University Hospitals of Cleveland and Cleveland VA Hospital, affiliated with the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed additional training in internal medicine at Mt. Sinai Hospital of Cleveland. He further completed a fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry (psychosomatic medicine) at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, the primary teaching hospital of the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He currently serves as staff psychiatrist at Alternative Paths in Medina, Ohio, and has a private practice in Akron, Ohio. Dr. Sparhawk has been a member of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders for the past several years. His letters to the editor on the treatment of bipolar disorder have appeared in numerous psychiatric journals. He lectures, teaches, and consults on the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder throughout the U.S. and Canada. Translation by Giovani Missio, M.D. Giovani Missio has practiced as a Psychiatrist for 6 years, having graduated in Medicine from Federal University of Grande Dourados in 2006, with training in Psychiatry by the State Public Servant Hospital of Sao Paulo and title Specialist by the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry. Dr. Missio is a member of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD), currently serves as PhD student, collaborator and researcher of Affective Disorders Program Group - (GRUDA) at the Psychiatric Institute of the Clinical Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sao Paulo. He also serves as director of VitalMente Institute, a private institution of mental health.
