Overview

"This work an irreverent, tender, funny, difficult, sexy narrative about growing up and coming out butch, wrestling and embracing it, and then wrestling with it some more. ""Butch is a Noun"" is a story of butch in its best and worst moments, about butch in the context of femme, butch in the orbit of another butch, and butch trying to stand alone, sometimes bravely and sometimes foolishly, sometimes successfully and sometimes fatally. ""Butch is a Noun"" began its life as a popular lecture and reveals this gender as a rich, complex, and highly nuanced gender in its own right. It makes butchness accessible to those who are new to the concept, and its finely observed detail makes gender outlaws of all stripes feel as though they have come home."

Author Information

S. Bear Bergman is a writer, a theater artist, an instigator, a gender-jammer and a good example of an overeducated contrarian. He has published essays, poems, and short fiction in a variety of books and magazines, is a book reviewer at gendercrash.com and a perennial favorite at queer spoken-word events. A frequent lecturer at hundreds of universities on gender/sexuality issues, he has also advised many institutions on their policies for transgendered and transsexual students.
