He is an elected member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, fellow of the World Academy of Sciences, and fellow of American Physical Society. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1984 and master’s degree in 1986 from Tsinghua University, and PhD from the Institute of Theoretical Physics, CAS in 1990. He is currently the President of Beijing Academy of Quantum Information Sciences Director of the Quantum Computation Research Center of the Institute of Physics, and the Chief Editor of ""Chinese Physics Letter"". He served as the Director for the Key Laboratory of Condensed Matter Theory and Computation of CAS from 2010 to 2017, and the Director for the Division of Condensed Matter Theory and Statistical Physics of Chinese Physical Society from 2006 to 2010.
