Overview

Brutal is a story within a story. Former ABC journalist Paula Nagel, a household name in the early years of current affairs television, has led a dramatic life. While recovering from a double mastectomy she begins writing the story of her family, in particular her risk-taking SP bookie father, to help her understand her world. As the chapters emerge, full of colourful characters and secrets uncovered, she suffers a horrific injury. South Australia's first female presenter of ABC television's This Day Tonight, Paula Nagel made her small-screen debut in 1967 and worked for the national broadcaster for 21 years before moving into the boardroom and marketing, sponsorship and headhunting roles. International Education Adviser to the Department of the Premier and Cabinet from 2006 to 2010, in 2014 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her significant contribution to higher education, the arts and the community.
