What does a ligament connect? In which novel by Jerome David Salinger is Holden Caulfield a character? What was the earliest known name for the island of Britain? If you know the answer to these brain-teasers (or even if you don't), this quiz book, compiled by the editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, will offer an entertaining time when used to test just the reader, or (preferably) to exasperate friends and family. The content has a very wide brief and concentrates as much on general knowledge as more specific subjects; there are 800 questions on everything from art and culture to science, sport and the Nobel Prize. A useful adjunct to the questions may be found in the accessible explanations, and taking part in a quiz can be quite as educational as it is entertaining. It's also refreshing to note that the quality of coverage is high; the literature section while including the classics also takes in several popular authors, and even attempts critical judgements. There is also a box on each page conveying incidental information not in the questions which is equally instructive and surprising (the Tower of London, for instance, has served as a royal palace, political prison, place of execution, arsenal and royal mint). So get those brain cells hopping by dipping into this book - you may surprise yourself by how much (or how little) you know. (Kirkus UK)
