It wanted three days only to Christmas, always an important day with Jack, and since there was much shopping to be done if the Christmas was to be the time of feasting which Jack likes to make it, one hand was chosen from each mess to go on shore, and make the purchases for all the sixteen to twenty men who comprised a mess.
