This is an examination of the contemporary position of women in agriculture and looks at why farm women are virtually absent from positions of power and leadership. Alston draws on interviews and surveys from Australian women-farmers, bureaucrats, leaders and activists, and compares these to the experiences of powerful men in the industry. It is clear that ideology and structure prevent agricultural women from becoming prominent in an industry to which they contribute so much. Yet far from being helpless victims, the women emerge as strong, determined characters forging an alternative discourse through multiple strategies of resistance.
