OverviewExcerpt from Book of Common Order: For Use in Church Services and Offices To promote the orderly, reverent, and edifying conduct of Public Worship and other Services of the Church, in keeping with historical standards, is the ruling purpose of the present book. A Common Order in the government of the Church is recognized in every Christian communion; and a Common Order in regular Church Worship and Offices, without rigid uniformity, is correspondingly desirable, in so far as it is practic able. The freedom of the Spirit in fresh Spontaneous expressions of devotion must ever be welcomed and conserved. The Forms of Service here following are not intended to restrict the exercise of such freedom. They are meant to be suggestive, to supply in Specimens a standard and guide for Ministers, being at the same time corrective of irregular or extravagant effusions and of individual aberrations in the conduct of Church ordinances.
