Overview

Bodies are serious, irreverent, sexy, fragile, strong, political, and inseparable from our experiences and identities as human beings. Pushing the dialogue and confronting monolithic myths, this collection of essays tackles topics like weight, disability, desire, fertility, illness, and the embodied experience of race in deep, challenging ways. Selected from the archives of Catapult magazine, the essays in Body Language affirm and challenge the personal and political conversations around human bodies from the perspectives of thirty writers diverse in race, age, gender, size, sexuality, health, ability, geography, and class--a brilliant group probing and speaking their own truths about their bodies and identities, refusing to submit to others' expectations about how their bodies should look, function, and behave. Covering a wide range of experiences--from art modeling as a Black woman to nostalgia for a brutalizing high school sport, from the frightening upheaval of cancer diagnoses to the small beauties of funeral sex--this collection is intelligent, sensitive, and unflinchingly candid. Through the power of personal narratives, as told by writers at all stages of their careers, Body Language reflects the many ways in which we understand and inhabit our bodies.

Author Information

"Matt Ortile is the author of The Groom Will Keep His Name and the executive editor of Catapult magazine. Matt Ortile is the author of The Groom Will Keep His Name and the executive editor of Catapult magazine. When he was seven, David Sadzin's first grade teacher gave him a paragraph to read out loud. She interrupted him halfway to proclaim him ""The Ringmaster"" in his class's musical extravaganza about the circus. He's been using his voice to get out of trouble ever since. After a few intense years on New York's stages, performing traditional and experimental theater, improv, and sketch comedy, he's now settled comfortably in front of the mic in his home studio in Brooklyn. Nicole Chung is the author of All You Can Ever Know: A Memoir, a contributing writer at the Atlantic, and the former editor-in-chief of Catapult magazine. Nicole Chung is the author of All You Can Ever Know: A Memoir, a contributing writer at the Atlantic, and the former editor-in-chief of Catapult magazine. Catherine Ho is a Midwesterner living in NYC. She's an AudioFile Best of 2021, Earphones Award winner, and AA2022-nominated voice actor. She's voiced hundreds of characters for the Big 5 publishers, Nickelodeon, Havas, TedLive, Macy's, IBM, and more. Raised in Ohio by English language learners, she has an ear and agility for accents. She is a relentless and eclectic consumer of media in all forms, reader for a literary magazine, coached and passable at kickboxing and boxing, music literate, a trained singer, and truly mediocre at the ukulele. Adi Cabral is a classically trained actor, dialect coach, and intimacy director holding their MFA in theater performance from Arizona State University. Their work has been shared on stage at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities (Colorado), the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (Missouri), New Repertory Theatre (Massachusetts), the Stella Adler Studio of Acting (New York), Mildred's Umbrella Theatre Company (Texas), The New Hazlett Theater (Pennsylvania), The Hangar Theatre Company (New York), Central Square Theatre (Massachusetts), Latino Theater Company (California), and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Scotland, UK). Adi is a certified teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework and Knight-Thompson Speechwork. As a professor of theater, voice, and movement, their research focuses on inclusive practices for training LGBTQ+ identified actors. Sean Crisden is a multitalented actor and an AudioFile Earphones Award-winning narrator who has recorded audiobooks in almost every genre, from science fiction to romance. He has also voiced characters in numerous video games, such as the award-winning ShadowGun, and appeared in many commercials and films, including The Last Airbender. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Sean now resides in Phoenix, Arizona. Angela Juarez has been narrating books since 2019. Her favorite books are the kind that make her kids laugh out loud! The best part of her day is getting to play with her two wonderful children. Her love language is food."
