Biotechnology of Ornamental Plants

Overview

Ornamental plants include herbaceous plants produced as bedding plants, greenhouse pot plants and cut flowers, as well as bulbs, trees, shrubs and vines. Ornamental plant production is of increasing importance worldwide. Basic scientific research has provided a better understanding of plant regeneration, genetics, growth and development. This has led to the development of technologies which may improve ornamental species. This text reviews advances in the biotechnology of ornamentals. For example, genes have been identified for flower characteristics and pest resistance and these have been engineered into ornamental species. The book is divided into four main parts. It is aimed primarily at workers in horticulture and plant biotechnology, but should also be of interest to plant physiologists, geneticists and molecular biologists.
There have been incredible advances in biotechnology during the past 15 years. . . . It has been difficult to maintain currency in this literature with so many recent discoveries, and this book provides an excellent summary. . . . For a researcher, this is a totally enjoyable book because it allows one's mind to synthesize ideas while reading about the various subjects. . . . This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in any aspect of ornamental plants. . . . [It] serves as an important resource for scientists by providing instant access to important references related to a particular topic. As a researcher of ornamental plants, I found this book refreshing to read because it is one of the few available that focuses on research of ornamental plants rather than the agronomic crops. . . . My only regret with this book was similar to that of reading a good novel in that I wished that there were more left to read. --HortScience
