Overview

This Black History Month Special Release Features the Bios of 31 Memorable Black Men and Women from 1700 to 1870. Read and learn about one character for each day of Black History Month! Purposely, this book, Biographies of Early-century Black Americans, was designed to present succinct bios of 31 noteworthy historical Black men and women who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Some of these historical persons were born in slavery to enslaved parents but were able to purchase their freedom or gain freedom through manumission. Others were born of free parents and were thus free men and women-albeit without the rights and privileges of White men and women. Some of them were secretly helping fugitives from slavery-runaway slaves hitching a ride on the legendary Underground Railroad, bound for freedom that was precarious at best. All of these Black men and women rose above their conditions to achieve what seemed to be the unachievable in a White man's world. This inspiring novella can be a valuable teaching tool in schools, and a different character may be studied for each day of Black History Month. In 2022, Black History Month spans Tuesday, February1 - Tuesday, March 1. The book is suitable for ages 11 and over. It is my hope that readers (and teachers!) will be inspired and motivated to explore more deeply the history of the African American experience in America.
