Overview

What is she doing? Redempta whispered to James, who in reply only shrugged and raised his eyebrows, in wide-eyed wonder. Just then, Granny came up behind them, evidently having gone in a different direction than James and Redempta. What are you children doing out here? You'll catch your death of cold. Granny reprimanded, but when she received no reply or reaction from the children, who continued to stare straight ahead she asked, what is so fascinating, that makes you ignore my very existence? Then furrowing her brows, she followed their gaze. Why, I never... she said in disbelief, bringing her hand up to cover her mouth. She was stunned silent for a moment. Your mother is gardening! She said in an awed tone shaking her head. Redempta and James watched to see what their mother would do. They could never have imagined their mother doing anything like leaving the house at four in the morning, to come out and garden in her night things, and in the dark too! It is the year 1917 and the First World War is weighing down on everyone. Spring is especially hard for one Canadian family living in rural Ontario. March brought with it two tragedies to great to withstand. But, life must go on and the family comes closer together to make it through this hard time. As seasons change, wounds begin to heal, and the adventure begins. Mischief and entertainment follow the family through the year.
