OverviewPlease note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Bensen Aircraft Corporation was established by Dr. Igor Bensen at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina in 1952 to develop and market a variety of helicopters and autogyros of Bensen's own design. The most successful product was the Bensen B-8 that first flew in 1955 and remained in production until the company closed down in 1987.An autogyro is characterized by a free-spinning rotor that turns because of passage of air upward through the rotor. The vertical component of the total aerodynamic reaction of the rotor gives lift for the vehicle, and sustains the autogyro in the air. A separate propeller provides forward thrust, and can be placed in a tractor configuration with the engine and propeller at the front of the fuselage (e.g., Cierva), or pusher configuration with the engine and propeller at the rear of the fuselage (e.g., Bensen).
