He was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia and was admitted to practice law in Louisville, Kentucky in 1837. In 1839 he moved to Boone's Lick, Missouri and practiced law in Keytesville, Missouri. He was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives serving from Chariton County, Missouri.
