The author has broad and obvious knowledge of the law, politics and gender issues. Tom and Mary Rogers are the All-American people who fall in love and get married and have a child - Leslie - who is a true hermaphrodite. Tom and Mary choose to raise Leslie as a girl hoping that they have made the correct choice. In Leslie's pre-school years, it becomes apparent that they did not choose correctly. So, Tom and Mary let Leslie be the boy that he knows in his soul that he is. They move to another county to make the transition easier for Leslie. Leslie, soon called Les is the average kid next door in America, but with an anatomical secret. No one other than family and doctors and the superintendent of education knows Les' anatomical details until Les falls in love and proposes to Dana Oswald. Then when Les and Dana cannot get a marriage license because Les having the genitalia of both a man and a woman is declared to be neither and thus incapable of being married.
