WILD AT HEART 'This is a punch in the stomach sort of read. Dynamic, staccato sentences lead the reader into an anxiety-induced state. The characters in this collection are not poignant people musing existential woes. They are people at the edge, fighting for their lives! The writing aims to achieve directness and a sense of urgency as well as raw honesty. Nothing is sugar-coated or nuanced. The reality that hits you is elemental and solid. In every story/chapter, there is a fatal meeting between a perpetrator and a victim. The violence is breathtaking and racy, and the amount of emotions invested is huge. If I had to choose one from the stories, it would be Tell Him to Run. Maximum impact and a fine example of the merits of unpretentious, direct writing that differentiates between the weak and tasteless sentimental and the raw, humane and emotional. Very impressive.' DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE 'Not my usual read, but I am glad I did. This is a collection of short stories with dark and difficult themes. Henningham will draw you into worlds of drugs, violence and abuse in this study of human psychology and the depths of depravity, with a unique style of visceral and harrowing descriptions at times at odds with humorous insights. The familiarity of Henningham's characterisation, use of dialogue and setting mixed with situations that are alien to this reader took me on a rollercoaster of a journey that left me feeling suitably uncomfortable, disturbed and emotional. A very clean and well formatted book made these pages fly by. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys well written, engaging and absorbing writing.' MASTERFUL SHORT STORIES 'This is one of the best short story collections ever. I can say with all honesty that no what genre of work you prefer, you will miss out on some of the edgiest and best writing a reader can devour. There are five (would have eaten far more) tales of victims and perpetrators that are delivered from a first-person point of view. Normally, this might, in a short story, result in a thinly painted descriptive monologue, but the author's commanding style of writing delivers. You will enter the dark and often seedy world of the protagonists, and you will feel their pain, frustration, and fear. There are deeper messages in each story, a thought-provoking understanding of the circumstances that cause us or the characters to behave badly, and even an innocent child manifesting fears by reading the emotional undercurrents between loving and caring parents. This is definitely a must-read. I will now work my way through the other books published by this author.'
