Begin Reading Today is a great resource for the eager reader who wants to begin reading today. When children are ready to read, they want to be able to pick up a book and begin reading right away, but sight words can slow them down. As a reading tutor for nearly 20 years and a mother, I struggled to find books for these eager readers, so I set out to write a book the early reader can pick up and begin reading right away. A knowledge of sight words gives early readers confidence and fluency as they develop skills in reading. Sight words - high frequency words - make up over 75% of children's books. Each page introduces only one new sight word in a systematic, thoughtful way beginning with the easiest, most frequent sight words. Colorful images embedded in the sentences take the place of words the early reader may not know, so the new reader is able to begin reading sentences by the third sight word introduced! The reader enjoys identifying the colorful pictures of elephants, birds, trees, cake, balloons, squirrels, and many more images which replace difficult words and brighten up the sentences on the page. Everyone can read through the book at a comfortable pace that fits. Begin Reading Today contains information on how to use the book, correcting reading errors, and an alternative method for struggling readers. In addition, a reproducible Progress Page is provided for keeping track of words mastered. Every sight word introduced is reinforced throughout the book so when the book is completed, the reader can read 50 sight words with ease. You do not need to be a teacher to help your child read 50 sight words with Begin Reading Today. Sit down and read along with your children or let them read alone until they come to a new word. Heidi Unkrich graduated from Truman State University with a Bachelor of Science in English Education. She has been helping children and young adults become better readers for over 20 years. In addition, Heidi has been a copy editor for Sage Publications. She lives in Iowa with her husband.
