Away for The Holidays is a collection of stories written by veterans in the Veterans Writing Group San Diego. Each shares a story of celebrating holidays--that time of family, food, friendship and relative safety-- far from those they love. Their stores are heartwarming and heart-rending, funny and frightening as they recall Christmas' spent on the battlefields of World War II, Vietnam or Kandahar. For the civilian reader, these under-the-helmet stories reveal the everyday sacrifices, camaraderie and pride of our military. For those who have served, these stories will bring back memories of being young and away from home for the holidays. The Veterans' Writing Group was formed in 2010 by Gail Chatfield and John Maki with the support of the Writers Guild Foundation's Veteran Writing Program in Los Angeles. The VWG offers an opportunity for veterans to improve their writing skills, develop a creative outlet, share their experiences and explore the possibilities of a career in writing. The VWG provides professional mentors who share their expertise in the areas of storytelling, editing, publishing, public relations and other aspects of writing. The VWG consists of veterans from World War II, Korea, peacetime, Cold War, Vietnam, Gulf War, OIF/OEF and represent all branches of service. Many have had books published and others are just beginning their writing journey. The group includes novelists, historians, poets, memoirists and screenwriters.
