Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Auditory-Verbal Rehabilitation: Influence of the Hand Cue Technique on Acoustic Parameters submitted by Joanne Yung for the degree of Master of Science in Audiology at the University of Hong Kong in May 2004 Auditory-verbal therapy is a common habilitation approach for hearing-impaired people, which emphasizes the function of audition instead of using visual cues. To encourage the early listeners to hear sound signals, therapists may use the hand cue as one of the techniques during training sessions. For hearing-impaired people, especially those who have unilateral hearing loss, the use of the hand cue may not be beneficial since it may distort or attenuate the perceived sound signals. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether sound signals were attenuated when the hand cue was used. If yes, how much intensity was reduced, which frequency range was most affected, and what was the effects of azimuth and distance? An anthropometric manikin was used to measure the intensity response to digital speech-noise signals transmitted through a speaker. Results of the study indicated that the overall intensity attenuated when using the hand cue ranged from 0.16 dB to 2.64 dB. In high frequency octave bands, the attenuation went up vii to a maximum of 15.33 dB in the near ear. The intensity was slightly amplified in 1 kHz and some of the lower frequency octave bands. In general, greater attenuation was found at 90 azimuth, at higher frequencies, and in the near ear. The effect of distance on attenuation was not clear. The present research corresponded well with previous research findings. Results implied that a double-layered speaker mesh screen may be a better choice of visual barrier than the hand cue technique during auditory training. If further research is to be done, live voice producing both English and Cantonese speech may be used instead of the speech signals to achieve even more clinically useful results. viii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3047145 Subjects: Hearing impaired children - RehabilitationSign languageGesture
