Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Auditory gap detection in patients with cleft lip/palate Submitted by CHEUK Lai Shan for the degree of Master of Science in Audiology at the University of Hong Kong in May 2006 Problems in the processing of rapidly changing sequential information (temporal processing) are associated with central auditory processing disorder (CAPD). Many studies have found that temporal processing is a fundamental neurocognitive ability that may be impaired in patients with developmental disorders. However, patients with CAPD may be misdiagnosed as having normal hearing though they may indeed have problems in auditory discrimination, receptive language and reading (Schow, Seikel, Chermak, & Berent, 2000). Subjects with craniofacial malformation have received little attention regarding such issues. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the temporal resolution capacity in patients with different severities of clefting who had normal hearing hreshold thresholds. The Gap Detection Threshold (GDT ) was obtained experimentally in cleft subjects age 5 - 25 years and compared with age matched normative value in the local Chinese population, using the Cantonese version of the Random Gap Detection Test (RGDT). A Chinese version of the Amsterdam Inventory for Auditory Disability and Handicap (AIADH-C), a subjective hearing assessment questionnaire, was also given to hreshold each patient to evaluate the relation between the questionnaire score and the GDT . vihreshold The results showed that the composite GDT of patients with cleft palate only was highest among all cleft groups, but the difference did not reach statistical significance. There was no abnormality of temporal processing ability for any of the cleft groups as hreshold their GDT were all comparable with the normative values of the local population hreshold and Caucasians. The Pearson correlation coefficient between composite GDT and hreshold AIADH-C score was 0.08 with p=0.67. The study indicated that there no GDT abnormalities existed in this sample of the cleft population. vii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3799127 Subjects: Auditory perceptionHearing disordersCleft palate - Patients - China - Hong KongCleft lip - Patients - China - Hong Kong
