Designed for students just beginning to use atlases, these books offer well-organized, easy-to-access information. All three open with a map of the Earth highlighting the specific continent in relation to the rest of the world. The spreads also include general information about maps including definitions of terms such as equator, Tropic of Cancer, and Arctic Circle; and descriptions of map features such as legends, compass roses, and scale. This information prepares readers as they explore the contients through sections about countries (though Greenland is not labeled on the map of North America), landforms, bodies of water, climate, plants, animals, people and customs, products, and transportation. Young readers are sure to like Postcard Places, which features color photographs of the more amazing places on the relevant continent. Small photographs or colorful text boxes draw readers' attention to points of interest or fun facts. Maps and legends are simple, yet disseminate information clearly. These books will engage young researchers with a bit more ease than Wendy Vierow's Atlas of the Seven Continents series (Rosen).-- School Library Journal For middle readers just beginning a serious study of geography and cartography, this World Atlases series offers eight volumes of colorful maps showing seven continents and the polar regions. Each book has thirteen double-page spreads, starting with an introduction to map conventions and symbols (compass rose, tropics, the equator, scale bar). The political map of Australia shows that this continent contains only one country, though New Zealand and its flag are represented, too. Other spreads present maps of Australia's landforms, bodies of water (Murray River, Lake Eyre, New Zealand's Lake Taupo), climate, and major ecosystems, including a selection of Australia's unusual animals and plants. Especially interesting is the population map, picturing a large, sparsely populated area (Outback) and only a few densely populated centers around Sydney and Melbourne. A People and Customs spread tells something of the aboriginal cultures, with pictures of Maori dancers and an Aborigine artist painting with ochre, plus, designed as a bulletin board, a postcard page displaying touristy views of attractions like a crocodile show and Perth's skyscrapers. A products map reveals that Australians raise huge numbers of sheep and cattle and mine 95% of the world's opals, while a transportation map shows how they get around on highways, trains, and ferryboats. As a finale, the last spread takes readers on a journey to the Great Barrier Reef by helicopter and boat to explore underwater coral.-- Children's Literature Comprehensive Database
