Overview

"Past and present collide when a family secret endangers a reluctant heiress bent on solving the mystery behind her grandmother's past. A dark thriller with intrigue, danger and unforgettable characters. ""A genealogist's dream that weaves the mysterious threads of a tragic past with an emotional present. ... Even as I was doing other things my mind kept going back to the characters. ... I've already recommended Asylum to my mother."" In 1899 while her father travels abroad, twelve-year-old Maggie Delito, daughter of the wealthy Northeast industrialist, unwittingly witnesses a shocking scandal. She's dragged from her family's estate and locked in an asylum to ensure her silence. Beneath the noted asylum's polish of respectability, a wicked villainy hides in dank shadows--and Maggie fears she will be its next victim. Seventy five years later, Laura Delito inherits more than assets when her prestigious family's mysterious past comes knocking. After sacrificing an independent career on the brink of success, she assumes control of Delito's failing jewelry business while daring to expose its ghosts--a strange old woman, cryptic messages, backroom betrayals, and a rare antique key that might unlock the truth. As she pursues clues from the Northeast to North Africa, she fails to see danger looming close to home. A Book Club favorite with Study Guide. Set in periods of transition with the rise and fall of manufacturing, changing mores and folkways, and struggles for equal rights, Asylum prompts discussion of social and economic issues that remain relevant today. IPNE Book Awards Winner: Mystery Fiction. Readers' Favorite(R) 5-Star Review. ALA Book Club Central Pick: Historical Fiction."

Reviews

Asylum is the type of story every genealogist hopes to find ... one of family, character, intrigue and resolve. Twelve-year-old Maggie starts the trek, but the journey home continues beyond her lifetime. ... A story that reads like a movie, queries like a puzzle, and feels like a family. I couldn't let the story go. And yes, I wept more than a few times. Awesome book. I've already recommended it to my mother. I loved the darker twists and turns. I was completely pulled into this story and sad to have it end. I so enjoyed this book. ... A fabulous job totally capturing my attention and keeping it. .. .Asylum skillfully unfolds along separate timelines, seamlessly moving between centuries, in a search for clues on two continents. Shameful family secrets. A heroine I can't forget. A masterfully written story, Asylum checks all the boxes for a modern Gothic must-read. We read Asylum for my book club and we loved it! It had everything from intrigue, romance, action and suspense. I think of the small child mysteriously sent away and her father's search to bring his cherished daughter home. A strong plot and subplots weave through two time frames and kept me wondering what the characters might do. My book club loved it! A well-researched suspense thriller, Asylum leaves you waiting to turn each page until you come to a well-written resolution.

Author Information

"Author Kathryn Orzech is a seasoned world traveler writing mystery, suspense, and thrillers set in ""New England and other exotic locations,"" with female protagonists who confront heart-pounding situations, flirt with romance, and brush with the supernatural. An avid film fan and self-proclaimed news nerd, interests include history and geopolitics, society and culture, psychology and science, and parapsychology, leaving few subjects off her literary table. Working on a new novel in her Connecticut home often begins or ends before dawn, and when she's not writing, she's likely viewing movies or binge-watching a favorite TV drama on the DVR. Criminal Minds, Downton Abbey, Madam Secretary, NCIS, and The Americans come to mind, though the list is long."
