Il est assez rare que l'on associe Eliot au romantisme allemand, en particulier à sa première version. Cette étude met l'accent non plus sur le romantisme anglais mais sur le premier romantisme allemand (le cercle d'Iéna) et tente une lecture d'Eliot basée sur ce changement. L'esthétique introduite par Friedrich Schlegel, en particulier sa formulation de l'ironie, est d'une importance capitale pour cette approche.
