Reviews

Pitsula has admirable scholarly strengths and effectively incorporates a level of detail not possible in the history of larger institutions. He writes in an attractive, straightforward style that is very comfortable to read and easy to follow. He has absolute control over a diversity of primary source material, from internal documents to newspaper accounts to recollections. Jean Barman, educational studies, UBC Pitsula definitely makes a useful contribution to our understanding of the larger subject of the history of higher education in Canada, particularly for the period of general university expansion in the 1950s and 1960s. Regina presents themes and issues of wider interest and at the same time a particular setting and a form of development that one would want to have as part of the larger picture. Pitsula's history makes a conscious and successful effort to include students and student culture as a major portion of the book. It is clearly written and organized and where there is a story with some emotional content, Pitsula relates it simply, directly, and tellingly. Hugh Johnston, history, Simon Fraser University
