OverviewThis book is the result of a joint effort between the Brazilian Agency for International Cooperation, CNPq, Embrapa, the Government of Cape Verde, GOPA, UFF, and UFPR. Its objectives were to train Cape Verdean technicians to implement an artificial insemination (AI) program; determine an AI protocol that would enable the dissemination of genetics to all islands in the archipelago; carry out an initial genetic dissemination; to set up a center for the collection and handling of goat semen; and to assess the feasibility of using goat semen diluted in 2.5% tris-egg medium, cooled to 5°C and stored for 24 or 48 hours. Furthermore, the context of the project, its implications for the dairy goat breeding system, and its social, environmental, and economic impact are discussed.
