Reviews

"""Artichoke to Zucchini is a clever alphabet book that provides temptation and inspiration for some future foodies."" --Good Reading, starred review ""If you're looking for an A-Z book with a twist, Alice Oehr's Artichoke to Zucchini is it. From ubiquitous bananas to the Japanese fruit umeboshi, this delightful picture book is perfect for growing little foodies aged 2-6 ... The pages are varied and kept interesting thanks to a range of descriptors with different qualities (sweet, sour, tangy, large, small, bold, delicate), and Oehr's illustrations burst off the page with freshness and color. The foods are depicted with clear, bold outlines and filled with striking colors and textural details that bring them to life. Their simplicity and elegance are reminiscent of Leo Lionni's classic books, such as A Color of His Own, and could provide great drawing inspiration to slightly older kids. The text is gushing but fluid, full of palpable excitement for the possibilities of food. Artichoke to Zucchini is an elevated yet accessible addition to a child's library, perfect to read aloud and come back to again and again."" --Fay Helfenbaum, Books+Publishing ""If you love food, you'll devour this tasty picture book with glee! ... Beautifully designed and filled with yummy descriptions, it's a fun way to explore the alphabet and learn about new foods."" --Kids' Book Review ""The latest colorful feast from Alice Oehr, a beautiful picture book to introduce young readers to fruit, vegetables, and dishes from around the globe."" --Readings Kids ""This book brought me back to my childhood of reading Eating the Alphabet: Fruits and Vegetables from A to Z by Lois Ehlert. I love trying different foods from all over the world and really enjoyed this new take on an old classic."" --Aleece Michalak, Vernon Public Library ""What a fabulous book! It is so much more than 'A is for Apple' and includes foods I have never heard of! This will be an excellent addition to any library!"" --Angela Moore, Mason Public Schools"

This book is a perfect pairing. The best part of the book for me is how many languages are represented, which allows kids and adults to experience different kinds of pronunciations (like all the different ways of pronouncing an A). So cool."" --Rene KirkPatrick, University Bookstore ""I am a huge fan of Alice Oehr's books and aesthetic color saturated illustrations. This isn't a board book yet the pages have weight and the paper over board cover makes this book stand out and have heft and beauty."" --Jesica Sweedler-DeHart, Neill Public Library ""Young foodies and their families will enjoy leafing through this alphabetical compendium of foods from around the world ... Sure, there are bananas and broccoli, hot dogs and hamburgers. But there is also durian, empanadas, kimchi, nori, tamarind, and umbeboshi."" --Stephanie Tournas, Youth Services Book Review ""An especially and unreservedly recommended pick for family, daycare center, preschool, elementary school and community library board book collections."" --Midwest Book Review ""With eye-catching editorial throughout, Artichoke to Zucchini offers an exciting, fun and educational experience for young and old readers alike"" --Judges' comments for the 2024 ABIA Small Publishers' Children's Book of the Year award"
